How Good Things Can Become Distractions from God: Modern Idolatry

This is a heartfelt reflection on modern idolatry and how it can subtly enter our lives.

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy for even the good things in life—work, hobbies, and entertainment—to slowly edge out what truly matters: our relationship with God and the responsibilities He’s entrusted to us, like our marriage and family. This reflection challenges us to consider how these subtle distractions can become modern-day idols if we’re not careful.

Now, don’t misunderstand—God doesn’t condemn these activities outright. Work provides for our families, hobbies allow us to relax, and entertainment can bring joy. However, He cautions us against allowing these things to dominate our lives in such a way that they take priority over Him. When we let them do so, we’re in danger of being pulled away from the very foundation of our faith.

The Bible speaks to this struggle clearly in Matthew 6:33: “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” This verse reminds us that when we keep God at the center of our lives, everything else will fall into its proper place. Our families, our work, and even our leisure time will benefit from being aligned with His will.

And hey, thank goodness the Bible doesn’t mention the New York Giants! (Haha just kidding!)

But seriously, it might be time for all of us to reflect and consider if there are any idols creeping into our lives. If so, let’s make some changes to prioritize what truly matters.

Love you all! Keep seeking God first.
