If Someone You Know and Love is Gay: Part III

“And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.”John 1:14

In part three of “If Someone You Know Is Gay,” we will focus on how to help someone or personally experience a breakthrough concerning homosexuality. In this blog and our next one we will give practical principles.

How can you minister to and help those who are struggling with homosexuality? Here are some practical steps. There is no way we are suggesting that the issue of someone struggling with same-sex attraction is a simple or easy process. There are no quick fixes; however, it is a winnable, conquerable, overcome-able battle:

1. Admit Your Secret

If you or someone you know is struggling with same-sex sex-attraction, acknowledge it to God. That temptation is real, not imagined. Honesty with God is the first step. “God, I have a problem. Help me!”Ephesians 5:11“Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.”As long as you justify sin, blame others, deny truth, and accept a lie; you will remain in bondage.

2. Align Yourself with Scripture

Authority must come from Scripture, not culture, feelings, or past sinful mess-ups.

  • John 17:17 - Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.”
  • Psalm 119:160 - “The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever.”

Your authority is not majority opinion. Your authority is the Word of God. If you align yourself with what Scripture says, you will break free and remain free.

3. Accountability Must Be Sought

You need someone or some people in your life that will hold you accountable for your behavior. This person or these people need to know of your struggle with same-sex attraction.

  • Ecclesiastes 4:12 - A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but wo can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.”

4. Accept What God Said

Accept what He said in His Word about marriage nad about homosexuality. Accept what God said about all sexual issues. The reason God placed marriage as the boundary of sex; is so you would not get burned. Accept what God said about forgiving, freeing, and giving you overcoming power. Trust in what God said:

  • John 8:32- And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
  • Philippians 4:13 - “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”
  • Luke 1:37 - “For nothing will be impossible with God.”
  • Ephesians 3:20 - Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us.”

You will either believe God or believe your feelings or what other people say about homosexuality.

5. Ask for the Filling of the Spirit

  • Ephesians 5:18 -“And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spriit.”

Daily give your mind, body, sprit, soul over to the control of the Holy Spirit. You confess any known sin and repent; you surrender every part of you to Him; and you ask Him, “Holy Spirit please fill me.” By faith believe that He has.Listen to this promise:

  • Galatians 5:16 - “So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.”

You cannot live in sin and be filled with the Holy Spirit simultaneously.

6. Abandon the Sin

If you are committing homosexual acts, you must repent and abandon that sin. It is not possible to commit homosexual acts and not sin any more than you could have a sinless adultery/affair. You must repent for homosexual acts and abandon them in order to be right with God.

  • Ephesians 4:22-24- To put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.”

You cannot hold onto Jesus and hold onto sin too. You have to choose one or the other. If you choose sin over Jesus, you have chosen to receive the consequences of your choice. God doesn’t want you to be hurt.
