Be Laughing

A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.

Proverbs 17:22 (NLT)

The word cheerful in today’s verse means glad, joyful. This is the only time the word medicine is used in the Bible and it is associated with joy. Medicine here means a cure, healing. The cure for loneliness and despair is found in relationships. In pursuing your other brother, have a good sense of humor. That is a choice you can make. Learn to laugh at yourself, not taking yourself too seriously. Laugh with others, never at others. Celebrate with people when good things happen to them. Be positive and not negative with people. Try to avoid, as much as possible, those people who drag you down. Have and express the joy of the Lord. Philippians 4:4 says, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” Paul said that when he was locked up in a prison cell.Work at being a fun person, not a killjoy, complainer, or someone who is perennially negative about life. Someone said, “If you can laugh at it, you can live with it.” People want to be around someone who possesses a good sense of humor. It’s within your power, through the choices you make, to possess it.
