Breaking Satan's Strongholds

“We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.”

II Corinthians 10:4-5

A stronghold is a sin habit. It is a point, a link in your life where Satan has gained control. It is bondage. It is like Satan has built a fence around you and is keeping you there in bondage. This begins with a choice to sin, to go against God’s will. When you attempt to break free, he hits you even harder. It’s a barricade, a pit fall, a hindrance the devil has put in your way and your flesh (old desires) buys into it. What you, through Christ was under His control, now is controlling you. As you look at the context of this Scripture, you discover that these strongholds begin in the thought life, then action follows

Your stronghold could be lust, a sexual addiction, pornography, a habit, alcohol, drugs, tobacco, a wrong attitude, profanity, sarcasm, something in your past, some place where you go where you will easily be tempted. It could be food, someone else’s opinion, worry, jealousy, putting things ahead of God, money, reputation, pride, guilt anger or something else.

These keep you from victory, from freedom and will not go away by themselves. They must be addressed. There has to be a turning point, a place where you decide enough is enough. The cycle must be broken by your choosing to follow what God says. How can you break the bondage of a stronghold? Three things:

  1. Be Reminded

Paul says you don’t have to remain in bondage. Your stronghold can be broken. God has provided us weapons in order to defeat Satan and it begins by winning the battle in your mind. Take every sinful thought and place it under Christ’s control.

  2. Be Real

You must get honest before God and confess your sinful thoughts that have led to sinful actions. Bring the stronghold to Jesus Christ and thank Him that He has bondage-breaking power. Trust that His weapons always work.

  3. Be Repentant

To repent means to turn to God and away from your sin. Only repentance can break sin’s destructive cycle. Repentance is not being sorry you got caught but you genuinely are grieved over hurting God. When repentance is real, change will come.
