If Someone You Know and Love is Gay: Part IV

“And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.”John 1:14

This is our fourth and final installment of lessons on “If Someone You Know and Love Is Gay.” No doubt, you have a family member, friend, co-worker, neighbor, or someone else in your life who is gay. In Part IV we focus on the final seven principles of breaking free from this sin. Also, this will be helpful to you on how to help someone in your life who is homosexual.

How can you minister to and help those who are struggling with homosexuality? What if you are struggling personally? Here are some practical steps: There is no way I am suggesting that breaking free from the stronghold of someone struggling with same-sex attraction is a simple or easy process.

  1. Alert to the Lies of Satan (John 8:44).The Father of Lies will certainly lie to you about homosexuality tell you that it’s who you are and there is nothing you can do; that you same-sex attraction defines you; that you can’t be set free; that God doesn’t love you; and that homosexuality is normal. You simply must REJECT Satan’s lies.
  2. Address the SourceAttempt to get at the root of your same-sex attraction. Seek a competent Christian counselor and discover healing. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you that which you need to get to the heart of the attraction.
  3. Aware of the Struggle (Hebrews 12:1; I Peter 5:8-9).If you are struggling with homosexuality, yes there is forgiveness; yes there is freedom; however, this may be an area you will always have to be aware that it is a struggle and that you can never let down your guard spiritually, emotionally, physically, and relationally.
  4. Assurance of Salvation (I John 5:13)Make absolutely, 100% sure that you know that you know that you know you will go to heaven.
  5. Avoid People and Places that Encourage the Sin (I Corinthians 15:33)You know those places where you are most likely to fail morally. You know those people of whom helps lead you into sin. Better to please God and offend people than it is to please people and offend God.
  6. Anchor Yourself in Support (Galatians 6:2; Hebrews 10:24)Surround yourself with people whose passion is to live godly.
  7. Allow Jesus to SpeakWould you simply ask Jesus to reveal Himself to you? To speak to you? He will, but you must be willing to listen to what He says.

If you are struggling or know of someone who is struggling with homosexuality, begin today to offer them hope and help. Change begins with Jesus in your heart.
