Knit Together

"Now when he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. Saul took him that day, and would not let him go home to his father’s house anymore. Then Jonathan and David made a covenant because he loved him as his own soul."

1 Samuel 18:1-3 (NKJV)These verses give us insight into why Jonathan and David’s friendship was so close and successful. Notice a couple of those insights. Jonathan was “one in spirit” with David. Some translations use the word “knit.” Knit means a bond, to join together, to be fastened to, chained to. A true friend is fastened to you no matter what the circumstance. This speaks of a commitment to each other. Notice the word “love” in I Samuel 18:1. This means an unconditional commitment to another person. In other words, love chooses to do something. This kind of love involves sacrifice. There is nothing physical about this love, it is a soul love made up of mind, will, and emotions. You are focusing on your friend and his needs, you think about ways to lighten his load, to encourage, help, and bless him. You choose to take the initiative to demonstrate true caring.As you can see, this kind of friendship is rare but vital to the godly walk of a Christian man. That kind of friend is out there for you. Make it your mission to find him or them. Your Effort in finding your “other brother,” will be worth your time.
