A Baby Changes Everything

Luke 1:26-37

²⁶ In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, ²⁷ to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin's name was Mary. ²⁸ And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” ²⁹ But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. ³⁰ And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. ³¹ And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. ³² He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, ³³ and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”³⁴ And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”³⁵ And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. ³⁶ And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. ³⁷ For nothing will be impossible with God.” (ESV)The most important pregnancy in the history of the world happened to a young lady named Mary, the mother of Jesus. The birth announcement came from the angel Gabriel who was sent by God to tell Mary, who was not married and had never had sexual relations with a man, that miraculously she was pregnant. Those words, “You are pregnant,” changes everything. Imagine, today you could have seen the Son of God on an ultra sound. Mary was carrying within her the Son of God, the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy.The angel assures Mary that God is in control and that this was God’s doing. God had already picked out the child’s name, “Jesus” which means “The Lord is Salvation.” Of course Mary asked “How” this could happen, but she quickly understood that with God all things are possible. She clung tightly to the promise given in Luke 1:37 by the angel, “For nothing will be impossible with God.”Notice:I. The Inclusiveness of the Promise“For Nothing”The angel told Mary that nothing—anything you could think of or not even think of, including getting pregnant while still being a virgin—is impossible with God.There is nothing in your life today or in the days to come that God labels “Impossible.” Since God is all powerful, all knowing and everywhere present, He never faces a situation where He doesn’t know what to do or can’t do something about it.II. The Implications of the Promise“Will Be”This means any future impossibilities too. You will face difficult and impossible challenges in your future. There is no doubt about that. But this promise from God implies that when those times come, God will know exactly what to do and when to do it. No matter what the situation, through Jesus Christ, God has an answer, a solution, a response.III. The Impossibility That Is Promised“Impossible”It means something that cannot be done, it cannot happen, there is no possible way for this to take place. What situation in your life in this Christmas season can be labeled “Impossible?” Whatever it is, that is included here. List your impossible situation(s). Spell them out. Look at them. Call them what they are. Don’t let them discourage you. You have God’s promise because of Christmas.Your impossible situation may involve a relationship, finances, a job, at school, with a friend, or with you physically. God knows all about it, but He desires for you to bring it before Him and entrust Him with it.IV. The Integrity of the Promise“With God”This promise is backed by the God of the universe; a God Who can do anything, anytime, anywhere. Those two words—With God—make all the difference between impossibility and miraculous. With God it can happen!  “With God” changes everything.V. The Invitation of the PromiseThe invitation is for you but can only be applied for by faith. God invites you to experience the impossible this Christmas.

• Do you truly believe what Gabriel told Mary, “For nothing will be impossible with God?”
• Do you believe this promise enough to accept what God does whether it’s what you wanted or not?
• Do you believe it’s enough to rest on what happens as God’s will?
• Do you believe this enough to release it to God and leave it with Him?

Right now would you take your impossible situation and write it down? Then underneath it write out this promise from God.
