A Charlie Brown Christmas and the Two Words That Can Change The Atmosphere
Can you believe Christmas 2024 is just around the corner? Every year, it feels like the debate reignites between those who proudly say “Merry Christmas” and others who opt for “Happy Holidays,” leaving the word Christmas out entirely. Recently, I read about a school in England that decided to exclude the word “Christmas” to promote inclusivity. Ironically, in trying to avoid offense, they alienated an entire group—Christians. Does that really reflect inclusiveness?
As believers, we’re called to uphold the true meaning of Christmas. This season is an opportunity to lovingly and confidently remind the world of its significance. A simple, heartfelt “Merry Christmas” can serve as a declaration of faith and joy.
This reminds me of the incredible conviction shown by Charles Schulz, the creator of the beloved cartoon Peanuts. When creating A Charlie Brown Christmas, Schulz insisted that the reading of Luke 2:8-14—the story of Christ’s birth—be included in the production. Despite opposition from the television producer, Schulz stood firm, even threatening to cancel the entire project. His unwavering faith prevailed, and the result is a timeless classic that continues to proclaim the Gospel.
Let’s follow Schulz’s example this season. Wherever you go—whether it’s a store, a school, or a workplace—choose to say “Merry Christmas.” These two simple words can transform the atmosphere, bringing light, hope, and a reminder of the Savior’s love.
Take a moment to reflect on the words of Luke 2:8-14, the passage that Schulz refused to compromise on:
That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. 9 Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified, 10 but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. 11 The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! 12 And you will recognize him by this sign: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.”
13 Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others—the armies of heaven—praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in highest heaven,
and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.”
This Christmas, let’s boldly celebrate the birth of our Savior by sharing His love through our words and actions. A simple “Merry Christmas” can remind the world what this season is truly about.
