There is Never an Excuse For Not Obeying God
Exodus 3:11-15
11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”12 And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”13 Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”15 God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’“This is my name forever, the name you shall call me from generation to generation.Exodus 3 tells the story of Moses encounter with God through a burning bush. God had a specific assignment for Moses. He was to go to Egypt and demand that Pharaoh release God’s people and deliver them from their horrible slavery. Moses’ first response was to offer an excuse, why he couldn’t do that. He offered, in fact, five excuses to which God answered each one.Whenever there is disobedience in the life of a true follower of Jesus, there is never an excuse that works regardless of one’s circumstances or how difficult the assignment. The bottom line with Moses is he just didn’t want to obey God’s difficult assignment, yet he chose against his feelings and fears and obeyed God. The result, God’s people were freed from Egyptian slavery. Before you there are two choices, obeying God or disobeying God. Because obedience is a choice, you can always do it. Simply put, it comes down to saying, “Yes” to God or “No” to God. When God tells you to do something, He has already equipped you to do it, so it’s not a matter of “I just can’t do it.” Some excuses we offer are: “I’m not talented or skilled enough,” “I am fearful,” “What if I fail?” “What if it’s not God speaking and it’s just my own voice,” I might offend someone,” or “I get nervous in front of people.” None of these or any other excuses can stand up to God saying, “Do it.”
