Happy Birthday, America!
Scripture
Psalm 11:3-5“If the foundations are destroyed,What can the righteous do?”The Lord is in His holy temple; the Lord’sthrone is in heaven; His eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men.The Lord tests the righteous and the wicked,And the one who loves violence His soul hates.Today, America celebrates its 247th birthday of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, which was built on the teachings of Christianity and God’s Word.Patrick Henry said: “It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians, not on religions, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ! America’s famous Liberty Bell has this inscription from Leviticus 25:10 “Proclaim Liberty throughout the Land and to the Inhabitants thereof.” However 71% of Americans in the latest NBC News poll say the country is headed in the wrong direction which serves to illustrate what David warns us about in the Book of Psalms.Consider Psalm 11: 3-5. David’s advisors believed the very foundations of their nation were in danger of being destroyed. The foundations of God’s Law, the 10 Commandments. They were distressed at what they were seeing just like many of us are distressed today as we see the foundations of our great country in danger of being destroyed. We are speaking of those foundations such as the Bible, Christianity, Morality, Justice, Righteousness, Personal Responsibility, and Religious Freedom; the pursuit of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. What we feared happening just five years ago, now is Front Page News. Like termites, there are those who are eating away at the foundations of our country. The war for America is going on here and now, we are in the midst of it.David reminds us, however, that God is Sovereignly in Control. God is aware of what is going on. God is watching how His people respond.Notice what David says about what God thinks of those who love violence:“And the one who loves violence His soul hates.” God hates those who love what He hates and God loves those who love what He loves. David asks the question, “What can the righteous do?” There are many things we can do to ensure the foundations are not destroyed. Let me mention a few:You can pray, and cry out to God on behalf of our amazing country. You can vote and vote biblically. 15 million Christians aren’t even registered to vote. You can teach your children about God’s Word, the price of freedom, the Constitution, and patriotism. You can support law enforcement and the military through your prayers and words. You can run for a local elected office. We must begin focusing on local elections. You can hold accountable elected officials. And most importantly, you can live out loud your faith in Jesus Christ and make a difference for Him right where you are.
