An "On-Purpose" Man

Scripture

Matthew 5:17; John 19:30

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. (Matthew 5:17)When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. (John 19:30)Jesus was the consummate example of a Man Who understood and fulfilled His purpose. He came with a mission from the Father. During the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus announced that He had not come to destroy the Law or the Prophets but to fulfill the Law and all prophecy. His whole life was about the purpose the Father had entrusted unto Him. Jesus endured the most gruesome temptations by Satan himself, that any man had ever faced, yet Jesus never wavered in knowing Who He was and why He came to earth. As Jesus was on the cross, he said, “It is finished.” Jesus had fulfilled His purpose by paying the debt of sin for every human being past, present, and future. Like Jesus, a Christian man’s purpose should involve doing something eternally significant.

Becoming an On-Purpose Man:

  1. God made every man with a purpose, a reason for being on earth. That purpose is eternally significant. David is a great example:

After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: “I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.” (Acts 13:22)

  1. Make finding your purpose a passionate pursuit. Seek to know daily what God wants you to do. Make sure your sins are confessed and that your heart and motive are right, and then ask the Holy Spirit to reveal God’s purpose for you.
  2. To discover your purpose, do those things you know are God’s will, including reading the Bible, confessing sin, worshipping, praying, living a life of purity, attending church, and doing acts of ministry.
  3. As a Christian man, one of God’s purposes for your life is to spiritually lead your wife and children. Lovingly lead by example and encouraging them to live for God.
  4. When you discover your passion, your reason for being on earth, you will find joy, peace, and empowerment as you pursue it. The overall purpose of any Christian man’s life is to glorify God.

You were made by God and for God, and until you understand that, life will never make sense.– Rick WarrenThere is a story involving Yogi Berra, the well-known catcher for the New York Yankees, and Hank Aaron, who at that time was the chief power hitter for the Milwaukee Braves. The teams were playing in the World Series, and as usual, Yogi was keeping up his ceaseless chatter, intended to pep up his teammates on the one hand, and distract the Milwaukee batters on the other. As Aaron came to the plate, Yogi tried to distract him by saying, “Henry, you’re holding the bat wrong. You’re supposed to hold it so you can read the trademark.” Aaron didn’t say anything, but when the next pitch came, he hit it into the left-field bleachers. After rounding the bases and tagging up at home plate, Aaron looked at Yogi Berra and said, “I didn’t come up here to read.”[2]God has put you on this planet not to bide your time, but to make a difference for Him in this world each day.Today, begin the practice of praying with your wife out loud. This may be uncomfortable at first, but the more you do it, the more you will find a comfort zone. This is one of the most powerful things you can do in your marriage. As a Wingman, ask God to reveal the passions of your heart as you pursue Him and His amazing plan.
