The Prince of Peace

Isaiah 9:6

“and his name shall be called…Prince of Peace. (ESV)Isaiah 9:6 was written 600 years before the birth of Christ. The first part of verse 6 speaks of the humanity of Jesus. But the last half of the verse speaks of Jesus’ deity. He was man, but He was also God. Jesus is a Savior for everyone. Today let’s focus on one of the names Isaiah gave to the coming Lord Jesus Christ—Prince of Peace.All of the world is looking for peace, real peace. Peace is not the absence of problems, sorrows, and disappointments. Peace is the presence of the One Isaiah calls the “Prince of Peace.” Are you looking for peace, peace in your marriage, peace at work, peace in your daily routine, and peace amidst your stress? Look no further than Jesus Christ.A prince is one who is preeminent in any class. Jesus is in a class all by Himself. He is the preeminent peace giver. Remember what was said when He was born:

Luke 2:13-14

¹³ And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,¹⁴ “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”  (ESV)

Ephesians 2:14

¹⁴ For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility (ESV)

Many are looking for peace in all the wrong places. It is not found in a bag or a bottle, nor is it found in sex. Peace is not even found in a human relationship. Peace is not found in some particular place. It is found in a relationship with Jesus. There are many things that can rob us of our peace such as worry, fear, a difficult person, a physical problem, something at work, something you have said, done, or not done, or something someone else said, did, or didn’t do. Stress can certainly steal your peace. The Bible says you need three kinds of peace. Only the Prince of Peace can provide it:

1. Peace with God

Romans 5:15 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. (ESV)Before Jesus comes into your life, you are at war with God because of your sin. The war between you and God is over when you get saved. Jesus fills your life with an incredible sense of His presence when He comes into your life.

2. The Peace of God

This is emotional peace. As I stated earlier, peace is not the absence of trouble or turmoil, but it is the absence of fretting over them. You rest in the assurance that God alone is in control, not your feelings and not your circumstances. You can claimPhilippians 4:6-7⁶ do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. ⁷ And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (ESV)To experience the peace of God, you must have your sins confessed up to date and walk in the center of God’s will. The awareness of the presence of Jesus brings the peace of God to your life.

3. Peace with Others

Romans 12:18¹⁸ If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. (ESV)People problems can rob you of peace. When Jesus is in control of your life you have the capacity to address people issues. You have the power to forgive and release any bitterness, unforgiveness, resentment, or grudges.

When you experience the Prince of Peace, you can sing along with the hymn writer who penned these words:

When peace like a river attendeth my wayWhen sorrows like sea billows rollWhatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to sayIt is well, it is well with my soul
